Common Modification Methods of PETG for 3D Printing
PETG can be modified in many different ways to meet the performance needs of various 3D printing applications. Common modification methods include:
1. Fiber reinforcement
This mainly includes glass fiber reinforced PETG and carbon fiber reinforced PETG.
Glass fiber reinforced grades are mainly used to improve stiffness, while carbon fiber reinforced grades focus more on high strength and lightweight performance.
Glass fiber grades are suitable for brackets, fixtures, and tooling parts, while carbon fiber grades are often used for drones, precision fixtures, and other lightweight structural parts.
2. Aesthetic texture modification
This includes matte finishes, silk finishes, tri-color effects, rainbow effects, and other appearance-oriented options.
These modifications are mainly used to improve the visual texture and surface appearance of printed parts.
3. High-speed printing modification
This type of modification improves flowability, helping the filament print smoothly without nozzle clogging or stringing, while also maintaining good interlayer bonding strength.
4. Toughness and heat resistance modification
By blending PETG with high-temperature polyesters or other suitable materials, both toughness and heat resistance can be significantly improved.
This type is suitable for functional parts with higher performance requirements.
5. Recycled and sustainable modification
Recycled PETG formulations can deliver performance close to virgin material while supporting sustainability goals and ESG trends.
6. Special functional modification
PETG can also be modified for specific functions, such as water-soluble grades, weather-resistant grades, and wear-resistant grades.
For example, water-soluble grades are suitable for support structures in complex hollow designs, weather-resistant grades are better for outdoor applications, and wear-resistant grades enhanced with materials such as graphite are suitable for gears and sliding parts.
